  • Have a notepad available for jotting down key points

Tips & Strategies

Practical, section-by-section guidance for the PTE Academic exam

RA

Read Aloud

  • Speak at a natural, steady pace — not rushed, not hesitant
  • A pause longer than 3 seconds will end your recording
  • Stress content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives) and reduce unstressed function words
  • Use falling intonation at sentence ends and rising intonation for lists
  • Read academic articles or news aloud daily as practice
RS

Repeat Sentence

  • Listen for the rhythm and stress pattern — not just individual words
  • If you miss a word, keep going — silence gaps harm your fluency score more
  • Prioritise the beginning and end of the sentence
  • Practise shadowing: repeat immediately while hearing, then from memory
  • RS carries significant weight in both Speaking and Listening scores
DI

Describe Image

  • Follow a fixed structure: Introduction, key data, trend or comparison, conclusion
  • Always identify and state the highest and lowest values
  • Use precise comparative language: higher than, significantly more, the majority
  • For pie charts: state the largest segment first, then contrast with smallest
  • Speak for the full 40 seconds — silence directly reduces fluency score
ASQ

Answer Short Question

  • One or two words is all that is required — full sentences are unnecessary
  • Common topics: science, general knowledge, occupations, geography, everyday objects
  • Answer immediately after the prompt — hesitation is penalised
  • A confident, short guess is better than silence
SWT

Summarize Written Text

  • Write exactly one sentence — this criterion is strictly scored
  • Keep it between 5 and 75 words
  • Template: [Main subject] + [main verb] + [key point], [key point], and [key point]
  • Do not include personal opinion — summarise only what is in the passage
  • Check subject-verb agreement and tense consistency before submitting
WE

Write Essay

  • Target 250–270 words — the minimum is 200, maximum 300
  • Structure: Introduction, Body paragraph 1, Body paragraph 2, Conclusion
  • State your position clearly in the introduction and restate it in the conclusion
  • Use formal academic register — avoid contractions and colloquial language
  • Reserve 2–3 minutes at the end to proofread spelling and grammar
ROP

Re-order Paragraphs

  • The opening sentence introduces a topic without referring to pronouns (it, they, this)
  • Look for discourse connectors: however, furthermore, in addition, consequently, finally
  • Pronoun references (it, they, this) must follow what they refer to
  • Concluding sentences typically contain: overall, in conclusion, therefore, thus
FIB

Fill in the Blanks

  • Read the entire sentence before selecting a word
  • Confirm grammatical compatibility: is the blank a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb?
  • Identify collocations — words that commonly appear together in academic writing
  • Eliminate grammatically incompatible options first, then choose by meaning
  • The word bank includes distractors — not every word will be used
MCQ

Multiple Choice

  • Read the question before scanning the passage for relevant information
  • Eliminate clearly incorrect options first to narrow your choice
  • For MCQ Multiple Answer, incorrect selections cancel correct ones — be selective
  • Avoid answers that simply repeat words from the passage without meaning match
WFD

Write from Dictation

  • WFD carries the highest individual mark weight in the Listening section
  • Focus first on content words: nouns, main verbs, adjectives
  • Use shorthand or initials while listening, then expand during typing
  • Spelling matters — common errors include: their/there, affect/effect, its/it's
  • Every correct word earns a point — attempt all words, even if uncertain
HIW

Highlight Incorrect Words

  • Read the full transcript carefully before the audio begins
  • Click as soon as you detect a discrepancy — trust your first instinct
  • Typically 2–7 words differ from the spoken audio
  • Incorrect clicks deduct marks — only select words you are confident about
SST

Summarize Spoken Text

  • Take notes throughout the audio using abbreviations and key phrases
  • Write between 50 and 70 words — check your count before submitting
  • Include the main idea and two to three supporting details
  • Use academic vocabulary to strengthen your vocabulary score
  • Ten minutes is sufficient — do not overwrite or over-edit
